There is only one of the very few functioning community primary health clinic in Ilogbo and it belongs to the local government. This hospital (Ilogbo Community Health Center) had seen better days and is currently in state of disrepair: the rooms, beds, bedding, curtains and toilets are in terrible condition. The situation is critical, power for the entire community, including the Centre is extremely intermittent and unpredictable. The center therefore goes without electricity for days: babies are often delivered in darkness, using only the light provided by a cellphone.
The Center does not have a perimeter fence to protect it: the premises is completely exposed to the public which recently has resulted in security issues: safety of health workers and patients is of significant concern. Recently poachers have been visiting the empty land around the center which had been set aside for future expansion. The poachers have been confiscating portions of the land for other uses. Because the land was donated, there is no proper legal documentation to keep them off of the land, therefore a perimeter fence is strongly needed.
Although this is a local government facility, there are no free prescription drugs or health checks for women to benefit from: the only free services are provided by World Heath Organisation's free immunization program for children. WHO, understanding the nature of Nigerian governments and decades of infrastructural breakdown have installed their own refrigeration system with solar-powered deep freezers for the vaccines to remain potent and useful. Drugs at the center are sold at prohibitive prices, therefore women are forced to patronize local herbalists instead, which is not ideal.
